PAWNEE SCOUT
16" x 20" - 1981
Pastel on Paper

My drawing portrays a Pawnee Warrior from the area of the U.S. now known as Iowa. The Warrior is from the period when the Pawnee traded cloth, beads, weapons, and assorted dry goods with the Whites.

The Pawnee were a powerful tribe that occupied the grasslands, living in settled villages during the winter and hunting Buffalo in the summer.

The Pawnee were the only tribe in the area whose men shaved their heads. A small, palm sized tuft of hair was kept at the top of the head to which an ornament made of Eagle feathers, Deer and Horsehair was attached. Part of the tuft, called a "scalp lock" (seen dangling at the back of the neck in my drawing), was allowed to grow very long. It was a taunt to enemies, basically announcing: "Cut this off if you can."
